It all began at church. Ruby’s church. During a games night in August 2021. A mutual friend, Tolu Oni, introduced us. At the time, he was working with Chibueze and also serving in church with Ruby. What seemed like a casual introduction turned out to be the spark that lit the first flame of something deeply meaningful.
We started talking every three weeks for at least an hour. Ask Chibueze why. It was sha two people drawn to each other’s presence, exchanging voice notes, laughter, stories, and ideas. But before long, it became clear that this was more than a passing connection. There was alignment of values, of vision, of faith.
Our first “real” date was at one of Ruby’s favourite salsa spots, making the dancing planned for the wedding feel like a full-circle moment at Danfo Bistro in Ikoyi. What was meant to be a salsa class and maybe a quick bite after work turned into a six-hour-long conversation neither of us wanted to end.
We talked about everything: five year plans, life, love, God, purpose, the future and we both walked away knowing we had stumbled onto something rare. We don’t know exactly when we fell in love, or who fell first. Probably Chibueze. But we both knew something special was happening.
Over the years, through job moves, house moves, answered prayers, and life-altering decisions, we’ve stood by each other. We’ve built together, dreamed together, explored the world hand in hand, and carried the weight of life with shared responsibility and fierce tenderness.
This love has never been a solo act. It has been fiercely and lovingly supported by our community. Friends, mentors, and family members who believed in us, cheered us on, prayed with and for us, and held us up when we needed it. Or were overthinking.
Now, four years after that church games night, we’re here and ready to do this for life. To continue growing together. To keep choosing each other. And to keep dancing.
The proposal? A full-blown operation. Chibueze was not playing around.
It took a whole crew, careful planning, and some serious stealth but they pulled it off.
On the 15th of February, just a day after Valentine’s, Ruby thought she was heading out for a casual post Access Bank marathon and just-because dinner. What she didn’t know was that Operation Proposal was already in motion, and everyone had their roles down to a science.
Since January, Chibueze gathered the team into a group so secret that they had disappearing messages on WhatsApp. It was that deep.
Chibueze had enlisted the help of Ruby’s brothers, David and Dani, her cousin Nneoma, the forever legendary Tolu Oni (yes the same Tolu who introduced us!), Tolu’s lovely wife and Ruby's friend Warami to pull off the surprise of a lifetime.
The venue: The beautiful Nordic Hotel, chosen for its warmth and elegance and a perfect backdrop for a love story four years in the making. As Ruby walked in, expecting nothing more than a nice dinner, she was greeted with balloons, flowers, a proper hug from Chibueze and the smiling faces of some of their favourite people.
And then there he was making a serious six minute pitch, then asking her to build a life together, surrounded by joy, prayer, laughter, and a few (okay, many) happy tears. She said yes. Of course she said yes.
And just like that, a new chapter began, not just with the perfect ring, but with the perfect reminder: this love is intentional, supported, and so deeply celebrated. Let's not spend too much time discussing the security guard who asked Warami and Ruby, "Ah are you here for the proposal?"
